Piston and Plunger Pumps

The Cat Pumps triplex positive displacement pump is either of the piston or plunger type, the significant technical differentiating factor being the seals. With the piston pump, the high pressure seal reciprocates with the piston and slides through a smooth-bore cylinder. In the case of the plunger pump, the high pressure seal remains stationary and a smooth cylindrical plunger slides through the seal.

PC-Piston_Cutaway_ClipThe triplex piston pump is designed to address poor inlet conditions, such as where suction lift exists or a liquid is close to its vapour pressure and is best suited to applications up to 85 bar. The mechanically-actuated inlet valves and UNIFLOW design provide an excellent fluid flow path through the pump with strong suction capabilities. For negative inlet head (suction lift) applications the option of a flat valve offers additional valve seating for stronger suction.

PC-Plunger_CutawayThe triplex plunger pump is best suited to higher operating pressures and features highly-polished smooth ceramic plungers and uniquely-supported high pressure seals. The precise concentricity of the plungers ensures that they do not impart side loads to the seals, thereby optimising life and durability.

When running, the synchronised pistons or plungers produce a low pulsation flow that contains a slight ripple effect. Maximising at 20% peak to peak, this ripple can be reduced to +/- 2.5% by fitting an appropriate pulsation dampener.
