Inlet Air Fogging (Cooling) systems using Cat Pumps are common installations in power generation plants throughout the world. High-pressure ultra-pure deionized (DI) water is pumped through high-pressure atomizing nozzles placed in the gas turbine air intake. The nozzles create a fine mist that immediately evaporates – also referred to as flash evaporation – immediately cooling the incoming air. The cooler air increases the mass air flow to improve gas turbine efficiency. These systems are the most economical, efficient choice for gas turbine inlet fogging. To avoid damage to the internal turbine components, the application uses ultra-pure de-mineralized water as pure as 18 MG/OHM. These aggressive water properties create a harsh environment for the pump and pumping accessories.
